The officer looked down at Chago’s card and asked Luna, “Who was that guy?”

“Damned if I know.” Luna pocketed the card and looked over the policeman’s shoulder and into the waiting room. She noted two people who seemed very familiar. One of whom she swore she saw at the airport. Was he with Chago? The more she thought about it, the more she swore she had seen them both at the airport when she got off the plane. What the hell? Neither of them noticed her. They were preoccupied with their phones.

At least she didn’t think they saw her.

Just as she was about to get up and question the guy as to who he was and why he happened to be wherever she was, Javier’s doctor came out of the surgery room.

He noted Luna. Thankfully, she had been a known entity at the hospital for some time so he didn’t hesitate in giving her an update.

“At this point, I think he’ll be okay,” the doctor said. “He’s lucky to have such a great partner in you.”

“Thanks,” Luna said. “Is it okay for me to visit with him?”

The doctor was a guy Luna knew tangentially. Javier had worked with him a few times but he hadn’t talked about him at length. A kind man, Luna felt comforted that he was the one to perform the surgery on soon-to-be fiancé.

“We’re wheeling him into the staging area now. Once we’re sure he’s absolutely stable, he’ll be moved into his own hospital room. I’ll have the nurse call you as soon as it’s okay to visit with him.”

“Thank you,” Luna said with a relief she hadn’t felt in ages. The thought of losing Javier on top of everything else nearly brought her to her knees.

She called her parents to let them know what happened. “Could you call Javier’s mom? I want to stay with him as long as I can. I’ll call them later, okay?”

“Of course,” Luna’s mom replied. “Are you sure you’re okay?” Her tone softened with concern.

Luna hesitated. Should she tell the truth or what she thought her mother needed to hear? “I’ll be fine,” Luna said. She split the difference. “Mom?” Luna started. With everything that had happened, she needed to know. “Did Daniel tell you about what he was doing?”

“What do you mean? Do you mean exploring your heritage?”

“I guess,” Luna said. “I guess you could call it that.” She bit her lower lip.

“Your father and I have always believed that you need to discover your own path. You need to decide what’s right for you.”

“Right.” Luna held these words in her mind and mulled them over. She knew that this was true and that she had to discover what was right for her, but it didn’t entirely answer her question. “He didn’t mention anything else? About any societies or groups or clubs?”

Her mom paused for a moment like she contemplated the question a bit more. “Not that I can remember,” she said. “Hold on a sec.” Luna heard her mother talk to her dad in the background, repeating the questions.
