The officer looked down at Chagoâs card and asked Luna, âWho was that guy?â
âDamned if I know.â Luna pocketed the card and looked over the policemanâs shoulder and into the waiting room. She noted two people who seemed very familiar. One of whom she swore she saw at the airport. Was he with Chago? The more she thought about it, the more she swore she had seen them both at the airport when she got off the plane. What the hell? Neither of them noticed her. They were preoccupied with their phones.
At least she didnât think they saw her.
Just as she was about to get up and question the guy as to who he was and why he happened to be wherever she was, Javierâs doctor came out of the surgery room.
He noted Luna. Thankfully, she had been a known entity at the hospital for some time so he didnât hesitate in giving her an update.
âAt this point, I think heâll be okay,â the doctor said. âHeâs lucky to have such a great partner in you.â
âThanks,â Luna said. âIs it okay for me to visit with him?â
The doctor was a guy Luna knew tangentially. Javier had worked with him a few times but he hadnât talked about him at length. A kind man, Luna felt comforted that he was the one to perform the surgery on soon-to-be fiancé.
âWeâre wheeling him into the staging area now. Once weâre sure heâs absolutely stable, heâll be moved into his own hospital room. Iâll have the nurse call you as soon as itâs okay to visit with him.â
âThank you,â Luna said with a relief she hadnât felt in ages. The thought of losing Javier on top of everything else nearly brought her to her knees.
She called her parents to let them know what happened. âCould you call Javierâs mom? I want to stay with him as long as I can. Iâll call them later, okay?â
âOf course,â Lunaâs mom replied. âAre you sure youâre okay?â Her tone softened with concern.
Luna hesitated. Should she tell the truth or what she thought her mother needed to hear? âIâll be fine,â Luna said. She split the difference. âMom?â Luna started. With everything that had happened, she needed to know. âDid Daniel tell you about what he was doing?â
âWhat do you mean? Do you mean exploring your heritage?â
âI guess,â Luna said. âI guess you could call it that.â She bit her lower lip.
âYour father and I have always believed that you need to discover your own path. You need to decide whatâs right for you.â
âRight.â Luna held these words in her mind and mulled them over. She knew that this was true and that she had to discover what was right for her, but it didnât entirely answer her question. âHe didnât mention anything else? About any societies or groups or clubs?â
Her mom paused for a moment like she contemplated the question a bit more. âNot that I can remember,â she said. âHold on a sec.â Luna heard her mother talk to her dad in the background, repeating the questions.
